About horror movies
Horror films are those types of movies that are trying to create negative emotions for those that are watching them. Their history has begun more than 100 years ago and during the time this genre of movies had a development that was closely related to the technical development. Horror movies have some specific features and these films include elements such as aliens, monsters, beasts, killers, serial killers, crimes, murders, violence, mutilation, zombies or demons. All these elements are trying to create an atmosphere of fear, terror and mystery. If many other kinds of movies have happy endings, in horror movies usually the end is violent and terrible. Many horror movies are based on literature or real facts.
Horror movies beginnings
The first horror movies have been appeared in the last year of the 1890’s, including supernatural events in silent films. The first horror film producer is considered to be Georges Méliès with the movie “The House of the Devil” (1896). Then, in 1910 “Frankenstein” has been released by Edison Studios. The word “horror” was used in movies description after 1920 for American production such as “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” (1923) or “The Cat and the Canary” (1927). Between 1930 and 1940, gothic horror movies started to be released, movies as for example “The Mummy” (1932) or “The Wolf Man” (1941). After the year of 1950, alien invasions or mutations have become topics for horror movies. Some of the most important films in that period were “Godzilla” (1954), “The Incredible Shrinking Man” (1957), “Night of the Living Dead” (1968) or “Dawn of the Dead” (1978). Of course, that the progress in technical and informational domains bring new developments in horror movies in the modern age.
Horror movies in the modern age
Some of the best known horror movies in the modern age include “The Lost Boys” (1987), “The Dark Half” (1993), “Anaconda” (1997), “Land of the Dead” (2005), “My Bloody Valentine” (2009), “The Cabin in the Woods” (2012), “Curse of Chucky” (2013), “The Babadook” (2014) or “The Green Inferno” (2015). Some of the movies that were released after the year of 2000 were remakes of some of the horror movies that appeared before. Another trend in the modern age horror movies was to exploit the events that happened during the Vietnam War or during the Holocaust. Besides, very violent crimes and torture started to be used more often in horror movies after 2000.
